Do healing prayers—and all types of prayer—really work? If so, how does that happen, precisely?
Can we measure the effects of prayer like gauging the speed of a raindrop falling from the sky, or counting the beats of a heart through a stethoscope?
Probably not.
Or at least not yet, since we do not have instruments to measure such effects, or just as importantly, to connect outcomes to specific prayerful causes. After all, are we not speaking of spiritual energy that is in some mysterious way linked to realms beyond our physical senses?
Be that as it may, it is possible to gather evidence of the effects of prayer. We just have to determine our standard of proof. If we accept, for example, the evidentiary standard used in the legal world of criminal trials, we can discover with reasonable certainty how prayer works.
A threshold of proof known as “beyond a reasonable doubt” is a standard in US courts used to determine whether a person charged with a crime is judged guilty or not guilty.
Can we use this standard to judge the efficacy of prayer? That’s a choice we may or may not be comfortable making. However, if we can accept such a standard, let’s then take the next step and explore the evidence, such as it is, concerning how prayer works.
Let’s do what prosecutors and defense attorneys do during trial: present testimony from witnesses. This testimony is then weighed as a whole by a judge and/or a jury to determine, by definition of law, what happened beyond a reasonable doubt.
So, let the trial begin.
Alice Carter’s Story
Our first witness is a remarkable woman with precise, highly detailed testimony.
There’s no doubt that Alice Carter’s life was profoundly altered by prayer. On October 12, 2023, Carter, a respiratory therapist, was driving to work when her car was struck head-on by a semi-trailer that had drifted across the median of the road.
“The impact was devastating, and according to the emergency responders who arrived at the scene, they initially thought there was no way anyone could have survived the crash,” Carter later recounted. “Clinically, I was dead for 7 minutes and 42 seconds. But those 7 minutes and 42 seconds contained an eternity of understanding that would forever change my perspective on prayer, faith, and the very nature of reality itself.”
Similar to thousands of other such testimonies gathered by near-death-experience (NDE) researchers from Raymond Moody to David Suich, Alice Carter’s story of her resurrection from clinical death includes extraordinary insights into realms beyond the physical and, in her case, detailed revelations as to how prayers may work.
She begins by describing her initial awareness after being hit. “The moment of impact wasn’t painful. At least, not in the way you might expect. There was a flash of blinding light, a sensation of being pulled upward, and then…peace. The most profound peace I’ve ever experienced.
“It was as if every worry, every fear, every burden I’d ever carried simply dissolved. I found myself in what I can only describe as a space between spaces. It wasn’t heaven in the traditional sense of clouds and golden gates, but rather a dimension of pure consciousness, where everything was simultaneously clear and transcendent.”
She then begins to perceive the effects of prayer.
“The best way I can explain it is to imagine being inside a living tapestry of light where each thread represents a different prayer being offered somewhere in the world,” she said. “And that’s when I saw them, the prayers,” she added. “They weren’t just words or thoughts, they were actual streams of energy, visible and tangible.”
Prayers as spiritual energy streams
To Carter, each prayer appeared as a ribbon of light, its brightness and clarity reflecting the emotions behind it. “Some were bright and focused, like laser beams cutting through the fabric of reality. Others were softer, more diffuse, like gentle waves rippling outward,” she recounted. “A presence appeared beside me, not exactly an angel in the traditional sense, but a being of pure light who identified himself as Gabriel.
“His voice didn’t come through my ears but resonated directly within my consciousness. ‘You’ve been chosen to witness this,’ he said, ‘because your understanding needs to grow, and through you, others will learn.’”
She said she was shown “what appeared to be a vast cosmic control room” where “I could see how prayers actually interfaced with physical reality. It was like watching a divine switchboard, where spiritual energy was being converted into tangible effects in the material world.
“He showed me how different types of prayers created different effects. Prayers of gratitude generated what looked like golden ripples that enhanced the positive aspects of whatever they touched.”
Healing prayers
Carter commented specifically on healing prayers.
“Prayers for healing created intricate patterns of green and blue energy that directly influenced cellular regeneration. Prayers for guidance manifested as purple streams that created pathways of clarity in people’s consciousness.”
She reported being shown poignant scenes that illustrated how precisely and directly prayers impact and influence specific individuals in most positive ways. In one such scene, her attention was directed “to a particular stream of light, a prayer being offered by a mother in Brazil for her sick child,” she recounted. “The prayer energy didn’t just disappear into the ether, it actually transformed into a series of events and coincidences in the physical world.
“I saw how it influenced the thoughts of a doctor who suddenly remembered a similar case from years ago, leading to a crucial diagnosis. I saw how it strengthened the child’s immune system at a cellular level.”
As noted, each of us is free, as a jurist would do, to judge the veracity of Carter’s testimony and to give it whatever weight we believe it deserves. However, there’s no denying its extraordinary nature.
If true, it is visionary in terms of revealing in marvelous detail how prayer works. Others have described the same phenomenon, but rarely in such specifics.
Collective prayer
Carter recounted observing that though individual prayers carried their own energy, collective prayers, when offered with unified intent, multiplied their effectiveness and power.
“When multiple people prayed for the same thing, their prayer energies would intertwine and amplify each other,” which created “powerful resonance patterns that could move mountains, not in a literal physical sense, but in terms of shifting circumstances and possibilities.”
In recounting her near-death experience, Carter emphasized the role of gratitude and love. She called them “the highest frequencies,” emotions that held great healing properties and that aligned with what she described as “the divine structure of the universe.”
She observed that every prayer, regardless of its emotional source, added to the overall energy field. Yet, prayers with higher vibrational qualities—hope, love, gratitude—were far more effective in creating positive change. Carter said she was shown that these purer types of prayers harmonized with a “divine resonance” that enhanced their impact, both spiritually and physically.
The effects of prayer
Carter’s vision, if accepted at face value, illustrates how prayer influences both unseen spiritual realms and tangible physical events.
She noted how in the spiritual dimension where she found herself, prayers seemed to connect with higher beings like angels or saints, who orchestrated their effects. In the physical realm, the energy subtly shifted probabilities, often in alignment with the greater good for a person or a cause.
While results weren’t always immediate or as anticipated, the outcomes reflected a deeper wisdom, she concluded, based on what she was shown.
Lessons and insights from Alice Carter’s NDE
What lessons can we take, if we choose to do so, from Carter’s profound experience?
Here are some:
- Intention is key: The purity and clarity of intention directly influence the effectiveness of a prayer. Altruistic, selfless prayers are more potent than self-serving ones.
- Gratitude as a catalyst: Expressing gratitude during prayer amplifies its power and enables it to resonate more deeply with the divine, if you will.
- Prayer shapes reality: Carter emphasized that prayers aren’t just passive wishes; they are active forces shaping the energetic and material fabric of existence.
- We are all connected: The streams of prayer energy observed by Carter highlight the interconnectedness of all beings. A prayer for one person ultimately affects the collective whole.
- Love as the ultimate power: Prayers rooted in love are the most transformative. They are capable of transcending barriers and creating profound healing and unity.
Since her NDE, Alice Carter has been sharing her insights online, with particular emphasis on the significance of sincere and intentional prayer in bringing about real-world changes. She also encourages others to engage in collective prayer because of the greater benefit we can reap from bundling our prayer power.
More testimony on how prayer works
Although Alice Carter’s NDE testimony is perhaps the most detailed report regarding the workings of prayer, hers is certainly not the only chronicling of such a vision. Here are others:
Cami Renfrow’s story
Cami Renfrow’s account is one of profound transformation, discovery, and resilience.
At just 22, her life was forever altered by a devastating car accident that left her with severe injuries, including a fractured skull and shattered sacrum. Against all odds, she survived and began a journey of physical and spiritual healing that defied medical expectations.
The years following Renfrow’s accident were marked by chronic pain as conditions like arthritis and fibromyalgia took hold. Yet, despite her suffering, Cami began to experience moments of mystical understanding, as well as both physical and spiritual healing, as she detailed in Dance Through It: Gleanings from a Near-Death Experience.
Her turning point came when she began to become aware of the collective power of the prayers and intentions directed toward her. This is how she described her experience:
“In the distance a gentle wave swelled up, moving across the ocean of light toward the point of perspective assigned to me. As it arose, I became aware that this wave was the concerns, prayer, and emotions being streamed toward me from hundreds of people I knew in this life and from many others who had only heard about my situation. My point of perspective rose as the wave reached it, and correspondingly, I was lifted, just a little, from the pain in my body. It became a little lighter to bear.”
How prayers and intentions become physical, tangible reality
Cami vividly remembers the moment when she felt the tangible power of others’ prayers and intentions.
“I had just viscerally witnessed prayers and intentions becoming physical, tangible reality. (In using the word ‘prayer’ I mean something an atheist could easily do as well as a theologian — no special form, just focused will propelled by the power of love and concern.)
“It was made known to me that this was consciousness creating form through intention. Nothing exists until it rises into form on this field. Every single bit of material in the world—even the computer or paper you’re reading this on, and the stardust that nourishes your marrow, and the paint on the wall, and the dog you love, and each single hair on his floppy ear must have begun there on the sacred field of consciousness, shaped by the impulse of intention.”
Through her ordeal, Cami discovered that intention, when fueled by love and focus, is a powerful force capable of shaping reality. She now embraces her experience as a sacred gift that is teaching her to channel life force energy for healing.
Cami’s testimony hints at the notion that through mindful intention and focused love, we may become, or may already be, co-creators with the divine—the universal consciousness of God, if you will. This is a concept worth meditating upon.
Betty Eadie’s story
Next up on the witness stand is American author Betty Eadie, whose 1973 near-death experience followed complications from surgery. In Embraced by the Light, Eadie described the experience of leaving her physical body and entering a realm of brilliant light, where she encountered spiritual beings.
Similar to the experiences of Alice Carter and Cami Renfrow, Eadie described witnessing prayers as beams of energy or light.
She wrote that she observed how the intensity and effectiveness of prayers were directly tied to the sincerity and emotion behind them. Prayers offered with love and gratitude, she noted, had the most profound impact, creating ripples of healing and harmony.
As with Carter and Renfrow, she came to understand prayer as not just a spiritual practice but a mechanism that actively shapes and influences reality—one that demonstrates a direct link between human intention and cosmic response.
Eadie also recounted seeing how prayers were answered, sometimes in unexpected ways, but that the effects were aligned with a person’s highest good. Prayers offered by groups appeared to amplify these effects.
These insights changed her perspective on the power of prayer. She now believes that every prayer, no matter how small, contributes to the betterment of individuals and the collective whole.
The verdict? You decide…
Now that you’ve read the testimonies of Alice Carter, Betty Eadie, and Cami Renfrow that suggest that prayers serve as a conduit for influencing reality, the evidence-gathering part of the trial is over.
Now it’s time for the jury—you! What conclusion have you reached?
Is prayer truly a dynamic force capable of manifesting positive change in our world?
Or do you feel the threshold of proof has not yet been reached?
